The Texas Institute for Teacher Education exists to prepare competent and compassionate professional educators dedicated to serving the diverse cultural, linguistic, and exceptional learning needs of all students. Accordingly, the Institute is committed to the following tenets:

The preparation of professional educators who recognize that culturally and linguistically responsive professional practice reflects a keen understanding of how human diversity issues impact the individualized learning process, including the acquisition of critical thinking, problem-solving, and performance skills.
 

The preparation of professional educators who employ differentiated, UDL-compliant instructional practices to create positive learning environments that value diversity, academic excellence, and the meaningful participation of all stakeholders.

Steps to Become A Teacher

Step 1

Submit Online Teacher Candidate Application

  • Submit Official College Transcripts.
  • Submit two Letters of Professional Reference (Applicants will receive a confirmation email with embedded links to the reference database. Simply forward the links to prospective references for completion/submission).
  • Register for the TExES Content Test.
    Applicants with a cumulative GPA less than 2.50 must perform at a satisfactory level on an appropriate content matter examination (PACT) in which the applicant seeks certification prior to admission.
  • Cohort Deadline Dates.
    • Spring Cohort (February 1st through April 30th)
    • Summer Cohort (May 1st through July 31st)
    • Fall Cohort (August 1st through October 31st )
    • Winter Cohort (November 1st through January 31st)

Step 2

Teacher Preparation Coursework and Field Experiences

  • Complete the following coursework prior to professional teaching internship:
    • ME 530: Introduction to Education (Includes 30 hours of interactive school observations)
    • ME 531: Introduction to Inclusive Education and Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
    • ME 532: UDL and Instructional Planning: Educational Neuroscience Implications of Professional Practice
    • ME 533: UDL and Instructional Assessment: Educational Neuroscience Implications of Professional Practice.
  • Upon successful completion of ME 530, apply for a professional or clinical teaching position.

Step 3

Internship Requirements

  • Pass TExES Pedagogy and Professional Responsibilities Exam.
  • Successfully Complete Professional Teaching Internship.
    • Field Supervisor Recommendation for Texas Standard Teacher Certificate
    • Mentor/Cooperating Teacher Recommendation for Texas Standard Teacher Certificate
    • Campus Principal Recommendation for Texas Standard Teacher Certificate

Step 4

Receive Texas Standard Teacher Certificate
